Welcome to ALMA

Austra-Lanka Muslim Association (ALMA) is incorporated as a not-for-profit community organisation in New South Wales, Australia. It was founded in 1992 by a few Muslims of Sri Lankan background whose initial motive was to provide a common platform to bring together the increasing number of Sri Lankan Muslims arriving in Australia.

Since its inception, ALMA has grown gradually welcoming the new migrants, students and visitors strengthening its membership and broadening its horizons along the way. Today it is a well recognised organisation that has links with federal, state and local government bodies, other non-government agencies and local community organisations.

ALMA welcomes all Muslims of Sri Lankan background to become active members of the association and its constitution first adopted in 1994 and amended in 2004 establishes its structure of governance, rules and practices. Membership in ALMA is open to all Muslims of Sri Lankan background – Moors and Malays and their families. ALMA wishes to establish good relations with other fellow Sri Lankans – Sinhalese, Tamils and Burghers who have called Australia home.

ALMA associates itself very closely with the Sri Lanka Consulate General’s office in Sydney and the Sri Lanka embassy in Canberra. ALMA’s active participation at the annual Sri Lanka Independence Day celebrations in Sydney is a good example of its commitment to keeping the roots to Sri Lanka well connected. It also has good links with Muslims of other communities in Sydney.

All activities of ALMA are run by volunteers, who are professionals, pensioners and students.  

 

ALMA ACTIVITIES

EID PRAYER

ALMA Organizers Eid Prayer for its members for the two festivals, Eidul Fitr and Eidul Adha. Following the Eid prayer ALMA also organize breakfast both festivals.

RAMADAN IFTHAR

ALMA Organizers Ifthar and Tarawee Prayers, including 27th Night prayers. This opportunity provides members to greet and meet other members as well as listen to prominent speakers from the Wider Muslim Community in Sydney.

EID DINNER

Eid dinner for the community are held within a week or two after the Eid Festival, combined with prize giving for children.

BAYAN & GUEST LECTURES

ALMA invite prominent speakers to give Bayan and Public lectures on relevant topics that are very beneficial to the community during Ramadan and on other special occasions.

ACEP

ALMA Community Education Program, ACEP, has been conducting classes over the last twenty years, this includes Quran Recitation and Islamic Study weekly classes for Children aged 5 up to 15.

RECOGNITION

Islamic Quiz and Quran Recitation competitions are held each year for the youth and children at various age group levels. Award night are held once every year usually combined with other dinner gathering organized for the community.

CHARITY

Each year especially during the month of Ramadan ALMA collects Zakat and send to support the Sri Lankan Muslims. In addition to Zakat ALMA also raises funds for other humanitarian causes in Sri Lanka.

WALK & TALK

Members have the opportunity join out door exercise program named " Walk and Talk" that is targeted to be a monthly activity.

YOUTH ACTIVITY

There are two youth groups, male and female runs series of activities that includes social gathering, sports, and other indoor outdoor activities.

CHILDREN ACTIVITY

In addition Children Educational classes, ACEP also organize various other activity for Children such as stage performance, art competion and sport activities etc.
